OMA Oro…A beautiful new modern space for modern art
A very exciting art space was unveiled in Milan earlier this month as the new venue of the Fondazione Prada opened its doors. The redevelopment of the 20th century gin distillery has been a 7 year project, led by Rem Koolhaus, Chris van Duijn and Federico Pompignoli. The Fondazione Prada, set up by fashion designer Miuccia Prada and her husband Patrizio Bertelli in 1993, has long been a patron of the arts and this new initiative has resulted in a 19,000 square metre space dedicated to art and culture and now houses Milan’s largest contemporary art display.
The project consists of seven existing buildings and three new structures: a museum, a space for temporary exhibitions, a cinema, a multimedia auditorium and the Torre – a ten-storey permanent exhibition space displaying the foundations collection.
We are most impressed with the the building known as the “haunted house”, which has been completely covered in 24-carat gold leaf. We do not know what we’ll find inside but we are sure there is lots to discover! A one-way ticket to Milan please…
