As the race named after our favourite metal happened this afternoon, it would only be right to mention Royal Ascot once again! Congratulations to the Trip To Paris and jockey Graham Lee who won The Gold Cup this afternoon. The 12-1 contender caused some surprise and upset at the track today for those who had backed Ryan Moore on Kingfisher and previously unbeaten favourite Forgotten Rules. This is a day of immense jubilation for the 39 year old jockey who won the Grand National 11 years ago.
Founded in 1807, the Gold Cup is the oldest and one of the most prestigious races at Royal Ascot. Stretched over the marathon trip of two and a half miles, the race is a stiff test of stamina and attracts the very best staying horses. The elegant Gold Cup is one of three trophies awarded at Royal Ascot that winners are allowed to keep.
No doubt that this year’s Gold Cup will be treasured long after today’s victory.
