The eighty year old Bulgarian artist Christo, who is famous for his mammoth landscape installations is taking on Italy’s Lake Iseo in June by constructing a 3 kilometre floating pier covering in 70,000 shimmering gold fabric. The floating gold dock system will stretch from Sulzano to Monte Isola and the island of San Paolo and give visitors the sensation of walking on water.
Christo, who has accomplished monumental works with his late wife Jeanne Claude such as wrapping the coast of Australia’s Little Bay in 95,600 square meters of synthetic fabric, or surrounding eleven islands in Miami’s Biscayne Bay with 603,850 square meters of pink polypropylene floating fabric.
The installation. entitled “The Floating Piers,” will only exist for 16 days after it is installed in June of 2016 and will no doubt be quite a spectacle and once in a life time walk.
